“What does Seika mean?” That is a question many ask when they first hear of Seika Girls High School. Here we are at a prestigious private girls’ school in Fukuoka. It is known locally as “Seika”.
Seika Girls High School has a rich history. It began in 1909 as the Fukuoka Higher Sewing Research Institute. Matsu Yoshida founded it. In 1925, it was renamed Yoshida Sewing Girls’ School. The school moved to its current location in Sumiyoshi in 1928. It was renamed Seika Higher Sewing Girls’ School in 1929. The name changed again to Seika Girls’ School in 1933.
After World War II in 1948, Seika Girls High School was established. It included a home economics course. A general studies course was added in 1951. New courses appeared over the years. Childcare and welfare were added in 2004. Food preparation came in 2005. Dressmaking was introduced in 2007. In 2010, the nursing and advanced nursing courses were established.
Seika Girls High School lives by its motto. It promotes “faith supreme” and “profound diligence”. It also values “autonomy and cooperation”.
The school uniform has changed over time. In 2003, a modern blazer style replaced the old sailor uniform. The new uniform still has a sailor collar. It is dark gray with a silver-lined sailor collar. A blazer with the school emblem is worn over it. The skirt is a dark gray plaid pleated skirt. A designer named Yuko Nakano designed the uniform. The summer uniform is a white sailor outfit with navy trim. A navy ribbon adorns the chest. The skirt is plain navy. Students’ bags also changed in 2017.
The Seika Girls High School has many clubs. The brass band is nationally recognized. An instructor, Yoshikazu Fujishige, founded it in 1978. Only five members were in it then. By 1990, the band was at the All-Japan Band Competition. In 1994, it won its first gold prize. It has since won 12 gold prizes. The band also excels in marching contests. It has won gold at every All-Japan Marching Contest since 2018. The Marching Show Band World Championships awarded them two overall championships. These were in 1999 and 2006. The brass band performs often. They do about 100 performances a year at local events. They even performed at the Shanghai World Expo in 2010. Also, they have performed at Fukuoka Dome.
The basketball team is also strong. They participate in national tournaments. The dance club is a regular at national competitions too. They won a national competition in 2015.
Many famous people have graduated from Seika Girls High School. This includes actresses, models, and athletes.
