The Fukuoka Oriental Ceramics Museum opened its doors in April 1999. It houses a rotating collection of around four hundred pieces. These pieces represent a historical journey through the art of ceramics in China, Korea, and Japan. The museum isn’t just a display case for beautiful objects. It’s a storyteller. It reveals the evolution of techniques, the changing aesthetics, and the cultural exchange that shaped these exquisite pieces. From the vibrant hues of Chinese Cai porcelain to the elegant simplicity of Korean Joseon Dynasty ware, the museum showcases the diversity and artistry of East Asian ceramic traditions. The Fukuoka Oriental Ceramics Museum also boasts a delightful collection of teaware. You’ll find tea bowls, tea ceremony utensils, and even furniture from traditional tea rooms. These items offer a glimpse into the rich culture surrounding tea in these countries. The museum’s founder, Takeo Nakaguchi, was a visionary. He was the former president of Nishinippon Tanki University, the former mayor, and the son of Umejiro Nakaguchi, the founder of Fukuoka University. His passion for preserving and sharing these treasures led to the creation of this wonderful museum. Located near Fukuoka University, the museum offers free admission on special days. These include Respect for the Aged Day, Culture Day, and the anniversary of Fukuoka University’s founding. Keep in mind that the museum has extended closures during August and February for exhibition changes. So be sure to check their schedule before your visit.
