Stepping back in time to 1947, imagine the excitement as Fukuoka City Higashihanazono Elementary School first opened its doors. This wasn’t just any school opening. It was a fresh start for 817 students, 650 transferring from Hanazono Elementary and 16 from Maizuru Elementary, joined by 151 eager new pupils. The need for Higashihanazono Elementary arose from a post-war housing boom in the 1940s. The growing number of children in the area required a new school, and Higashihanazono was the answer. This year, in fact, marks Higashihanazono’s impressive 78th anniversary. The school’s motto, “Green (Perseverance) and Flower (Smile) and Dream (Hope and Goals)” reflects its commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals. Higashihanazono has a rich history of educational research. The school has participated in studies focusing on various aspects of learning. These include fostering intrinsic motivation, enhancing reading comprehension, and promoting practical application of learned concepts. In June 2023, Higashihanazono Elementary hosted a special presentation for its fourth-grade students. Local fishermen visited the school to share insights into their profession. The presentation included a DVD titled “Until It Can Be Served on a Plate,”. It detailed the journey of seafood from the ocean to the dinner table. The fishermen showcased tools like “Ami” (nets) used for cultivating nori and “Kakigara” (shells) for collecting oyster seeds. They also explained the “Misu” process of sorting harvested seafood. This hands-on approach gave students a deeper understanding of the local fishing industry, a vital part of Fukuoka’s economy. The children were captivated. They asked insightful questions, prompting the fishermen to share personal anecdotes. This event connected the students to their local community in a unique way, fostering appreciation for the hard work behind the food they eat. Higashihanazono Elementary School stands as a testament to its enduring mission. It’s a place where students not only learn but also connect with their community and discover their passions.
