Slipping through time, imagine Fukuoka in 1873. Two public fire brigades emerge, the first in Fukuoka Ward with 33 members and the second in Hakata Ward boasting 122. This marks the humble beginnings of fire protection in the city, a spirit that continues to burn bright in the Fukuoka City Fire Department. The Fukuoka City Fire Department officially came into being in March 1948. Initially, they had one fire station, two branch offices in Chikushi and Nishishinmachi, and five detachments spread across Hakozaki, Momochi, Kuromon, Kusagae, and Maidashi. The department evolved. In 1950, it was renamed the Fukuoka City Fire Department, reflecting its growing responsibility. That same year, they began emergency rescue operations, adding another layer of protection for Fukuoka’s citizens. The Fukuoka City Fire Department embraced innovation. In 1951, they acquired their first fireboat, the “Hibiryu”, and launched a dedicated water-based fire station. Over the next few decades, the department steadily expanded, adding new stations and branch offices to keep pace with the city’s growth. They responded to major events, including the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in 1995 and the Fukuoka Airport crash in 1996. The Fukuoka City Fire Department stands as a testament to the city’s dedication to safety. As of 2024, they operate a fleet of 236 vehicles, including 33 fire engines and two helicopters. This dedicated force, numbering 1,080 individuals, safeguards Fukuoka’s seven districts across 343.39 square kilometers. Their presence is a reassurance. They are a constant reminder that even amidst a bustling metropolis, safety remains paramount. The Fukuoka City Fire Department is more than just a fire department. It is a symbol of Fukuoka’s resilience, its commitment to its citizens, and its willingness to embrace change in its pursuit of a safer future.
