“Aiming at recovering the original functions” is how officials described the goal. We are standing before a vital piece of infrastructure: the Fukuoka Canal. It has been a lifeline for the Fukuoka metropolitan area and Kiyama Town in Saga Prefecture for over 30 years.

Since its start in 1983 the Fukuoka Canal has supplied about one-third of the water for this region. This canal isn’t just a waterway. It represents a commitment to the region’s well-being. The Fukuoka Canal ensures a stable water supply for domestic use.

But there is also a second important purpose. Securing earthquake resistance capabilities against possible large-scale quakes is another crucial goal. The “Project Implement Plan” addresses this. It was approved in November 2018. The Fukuoka Canal Management and Construction Office started operations soon after.

The Chikugogawa-karyu Canal project integrates small freshwater intakes. It consolidates them into two main intake works on the Chikugo River. This ensures stable water intake and streamlined operations. The canal delivers water to 31900 hectares of farmland. This land spreads over both Fukuoka and Saga Prefectures.

The maximum water intake is 28.08 cubic meters per second. This is split between the left and right banks of the canals.

If you want to explore further, the Shojiro Ishibashi Memorial Museum is nearby. It honors the founder of Bridgestone Corporation. There is also the Koura Taisha Shrine. It is an important cultural site. Yoshinogari Historical Park offers a glimpse into the Yayoi Period. Yanagawa City is known as the “City of Water.” Its moats offer scenic boat cruises.

The Fukuoka Canal stands as a testament to engineering and foresight. It is more than just a canal. It is a symbol of resilience. It ensures a stable water supply for generations to come. As we continue our tour, remember the importance of this vital artery. It sustains life and livelihoods in Fukuoka and beyond.
