“But why a women’s university?” a visitor asks. Fukuoka Women’s University stands before us. It is more than just a university. It is a testament to the power of women’s education.

Fukuoka Women’s University has a rich history. It began as Fukuoka Prefectural College for Women in 1923. It was the first public women’s college in Japan. The college offered courses in humanities and home economics.

In 1950, it became a four-year university. It was renamed Fukuoka Women’s University. This change happened after World War II educational reforms. Initially, there was one faculty. It consisted of Japanese literature, English literature, and life science departments. By 1954, the university expanded. It had a Faculty of Literature and a Faculty of Home Economics.

Over the years, Fukuoka Women’s University continued to evolve. In 1993, a Graduate School of Literature Master’s Program was established. A doctoral program specializing in English literature followed in 1997. The Faculty of Home Economics transformed into the Faculty of Human Environment of Sciences.

The university’s operation changed in 2006. It went from Fukuoka Prefecture to Public University Corporation. In 2011, the International College of Arts and Sciences was founded. It comprises three departments. They are International Liberal Arts, Environmental Science, and Food and Health Sciences.

The university has three core principles. These are international vision, leadership, and creativity. The International Centre fosters global partnerships. It provides study abroad opportunities. Students can study at partner institutions.

More than 13000 students have graduated from Fukuoka Women’s University. The alumnae contribute to society in diverse fields. The university stands as a beacon of women’s higher education in Japan. It continues to empower women. It prepares them for leadership roles. It equips them to make significant contributions globally.
