“Wasn’t this entire area flattened?” someone asks, looking around at the serene setting. You are standing before Hiroshima Gokoku Shrine. It is a major Shinto shrine within Hiroshima Castle’s grounds. This is a place of peace and reflection. The shrine has a history intertwined with Hiroshima’s recovery.

Originally founded in 1869, it honored those who died in the Boshin War. This war led to the end of the shogunate system. It restored power to the Imperial government. In 1934, the shrine moved to where Hiroshima Municipal Stadium stood. It was then renamed Hiroshima Gokoku Shrine in 1939.

The atomic bombing in 1945 completely destroyed the shrine. Only one of its torii gates remained. In 1965, it was rebuilt within Hiroshima Castle. This was thanks to donations from Hiroshima’s citizens.

Hiroshima Gokoku Shrine is a popular place. People celebrate Hatsumode here. This is the first shrine visit of the New Year. Shichi-Go-San is also celebrated here. This is a traditional rite of passage for children.

The shrine attracts many visitors throughout the year. They come for various festivals. Tondomatsuri is a popular one. It is held every January 15th. People gather to see huge bonfires. They pray for good health and family safety. You might even witness a traditional Japanese wedding.

Hiroshima Gokoku Shrine has guardian dogs. These komainu statues withstood the atomic blast. Cracks from the heat rays are still visible on their pedestals.

The Hiroshima Toyo Carps visit the shrine each year. They pray for victory. This makes the shrine a popular place to pray for success. You can find carp trinkets and good luck charms here.

The statue on the right symbolizes independence. The statue on the left shows two carp. This symbolizes teamwork. Both statues are symbols of moving forward. They represent overcoming obstacles.

Hiroshima Gokoku Shrine embodies resilience. It reflects Hiroshima’s journey. It is a place of spiritual significance and cultural importance. It is a reminder of peace and hope. It is a place of reflection after the devastation. It is a place to look to the future.
