“Sailing safety guaranteed” is the promise whispered by the winds around Ikari Shrine. We are standing before Hiroshima’s oldest shrine. This is Ikari Shrine.

Legend says its origins date back 1300 years. Picture this: sailors approaching Hakushima Island needed a safe harbor. They lowered their anchors called “ikari” in Japanese. They prayed for safe voyages. This act gave Ikari Shrine its name.

Originally called Hakozaki Myojin, Ikari Shrine became the guardian of Hakushima town after Hiroshima Castle was built over 400 years ago. The great lord, Mōri Terumoto renamed it. Locals deeply revered it. During the Edo period, its spring and autumn festivals were grand. Records show these celebrations were very extravagant. Even now, the Summer and Autumn Festivals are lively. Ikari drums boom and sacred music fills the air.

Ikari Shrine enshrines Owatatsumi no Kami. This deity protects maritime traffic and promotes industry. Interestingly, Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima shares a similar structure.

Let’s talk about resilience. Within the grounds are two A-bombed trees. They are a Japanese hackberry and a Chinese quince. These trees stand about 1800 meters from the blast’s center. The atomic blast destroyed their above-ground parts. But they sprouted again from their scorched roots. The Japanese hackberry now reaches 20 meters tall. Its trunk measures 1.45 meters around. The Chinese quince has grown to 9 meters. Its trunk also measures 1.45 meters in circumference. These trees symbolize the enduring spirit of Hiroshima.

Don’t miss the Ikari Stone Big Camphor Amulet. Each leaf from the camphor tree is hand-sealed. Then it is adorned with a pure gold pen. It’s a card-sized amulet to keep in your wallet.

Consider attending the Shimekazari workshop. Create your own New Year decoration for your home.

The Ikari Taiko drums represent community revitalization. Local enthusiasts formed a group in 1975. The group created pieces like “Ikari Taiko Echoes”. They were pioneers of the taiko boom. Today, children carry on the tradition. They perform at events such as the Hiroshima Toshogu Spring Festival.

Ikari Shrine is more than just a historical site. It is a living testament to faith. It is a story of survival. Its legacy continues.
