“Seeking enlightenment in Chikushino?” Here at Shinkoji Temple, history whispers through the ancient stones. This temple is located in Yukimachi Chikushino City. Shinkoji Temple’s story stretches back centuries.
Let’s travel back to 1635. A paper remains that mentions the thirteenth head teacher of Kyoko-in Temple. His name was Ryojo Monto. He established Shinkoji Temple that year.
Another account suggests a different origin. “Geographic Dictionary” tells of Toda Saime. She was a vassal of the Takahashi clan. After the fall of Iwaya Castle in 1586 Toda Saime shaved her head. She then founded Shinkoji Temple.
Regardless of the exact details Shinkoji Temple holds a significant place in local history. The temple observes several annual events. These include the New Year’s service and regular services four times a year. There are also spring and autumn equinox services. Eternal memorial services are held here. Obon services and Hoonko services also take place. The temple even holds a year-end service.
In July 2021 a new charnel hall opened. It is called Muryoko-do Hall. Shinkoji Temple is currently seeking new members for the charnel hall.
Shinkoji Temple is also known for embracing nature. It has gained attention for its tree burial grounds called “Jumoku-So”. This is a natural burial method. The temple is also involved in several projects. These projects include pesticide-free rice cultivation and forest maintenance. The “Satoyama Zen Center” is an open temple. Flowers bloom here throughout the year.
You can reach Shinkoji Temple easily. Take the JR Kagoshima Main Line to Futsukaichi Station. From there take the Futsukaichi Onsen bus. Get off at the Futsukaichi Onsen bus stop. The temple is a one-minute walk away. You can also take the Nishitetsu train to Nishitetsu Futsukaichi Station. Then take the Futsukaichi Onsen bus. Alight at the Futsukaichi Onsen bus stop. It is a short walk to Shinkoji Temple. The Chikushino City Community Bus “Tsukushi号” is another option. Get off at the Futsukaichi Onsen bus stop.
