“What can we do to teach the importance of life?” This question led to a unique project at Kaita Higashi Elementary School. The school is located in Kaita town Hiroshima Prefecture Japan. Today we will explore this school and its inspiring work.
Kaita Higashi Elementary School decided to create a picture book. The goal was to convey the preciousness of life to its students. Fifth-grade students took on the challenge. They collaborated with Masamichi Mouri a dream facilitator and picture book writer.
The students visited the Kaita Furusato Kan museum. They wanted to get inspiration from the town’s Kusunoki trees. They listened to stories from firefighters and Self-Defense Force members. These professionals shared their experiences saving lives. The students learned firsthand about the importance of life.
Mouri guided the students in creating the story. A student named Akari Hosokuni contributed her ideas. The fifth graders worked together to paint the illustrations. They visited Mouri’s home many times. There they learned techniques and created the artwork.
The picture book “Kusunoki no Oka” was completed. It tells a heartwarming story about the value of life. The students held a presentation for parents and community members. They shared their experiences and the book’s message.
Afterward Mouri gave a lecture. He also displayed original artwork from “Kusunoki no Oka”. The exhibition was held at the Kaita Furusato Kan museum. The school hoped more people would see the picture book. They wanted to share its important message.
