“From humble beginnings” whispers the wind as it rustles through the trees near the Shanghai University of Science and Technology’s School of Science. This is the School of Science at the Shanghai University of Science and Technology. Its story is one of growth and evolution. It started in January 1995. The School was formed by merging several departments. These were from different campuses. Mathematics Physics and Applied Mathematics formed its foundation.
The School of Science at the Shanghai University of Science and Technology wasn’t always this large. It began as a collection of different teaching and research areas. They joined together to strengthen the fundamental sciences. In November 1996 a Mechanics department was added. This broadened the School’s scope considerably. A year later in January 1997 existing mechanical engineering sections merged into the Mechanics department. This further consolidated the School of Science’s position in the university.
Then came 1999. The School absorbed the General Chemistry Inorganic Chemistry Analytical Chemistry Physical Chemistry and Organic Chemistry departments. This marked the creation of the Chemistry department within the School of Science. It was a significant expansion. These additions fundamentally reshaped the School. It became a more complete and comprehensive entity.
The School of Science at the Shanghai University of Science and Technology continued to evolve. In July 2016 the Institute of Sustainable Energy was added. In July 2019 the Mechanics department became independent. It became the School of Mechanics and Engineering. This was a significant reorganization. Finally in January 2020 the School welcomed the newly-established Institute of Nanotechnology. The Shanghai University of Science and Technology’s School of Science. It is a testament to the dedication and vision of its founders and faculty. Its evolution reflects the growth of science and technology in China. It continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the future. The School of Science at the Shanghai University of Science and Technology stands as a symbol of progress.
