“Lost prayers,” a passerby muttered, clutching a faded amulet. “They say Sarutahiko-Okami guides them.” The Sarutahiko Shrine in Fukuoka holds a certain mystique. It’s not grand or imposing like some, but it hums with a quiet power. This shrine honors Sarutahiko-Okami, the kami of guidance and crossroads. He’s said to clear paths and banish evil. Here in Fukuoka, he watches over travelers and locals alike. This Sarutahiko Shrine isn’t as famous as its counterpart in Ise, but it shares the same guiding spirit. Sarutahiko-Okami, they say, led Ninigi-no-Mikoto, grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu, from Ise across Japan. He’s the “Michi-Hiraki,” the opener of ways. The shrine’s history is intertwined with the city itself. It once stood at a bustling crossroads, a guardian against misfortune. Even now, people come seeking direction. Every 60 days, on “Koshin” days, a special ritual takes place at Sarutahiko Shrine. Monkey-faced amulets are offered, prayers whispered for good fortune and protection. The monkey, “saru” in Japanese, echoes Sarutahiko’s name, further linking him to the shrine. Another deity resides within Sarutahiko Shrine’s grounds. Amanouzume-no-mikoto, the goddess of entertainment and harmony, is enshrined at the Sarume Shrine. She coaxed Amaterasu from a cave, bringing light back to the world. Performers and artists seek her favor, praying for inspiration. Look for the octagonal lumber used in the shrine’s roof and torii gate. The eight sides represent the eight directions. They symbolize Sarutahiko’s power to guide people towards the right path. Before you leave Sarutahiko Shrine, find the octagonal stone marker in front of the worship hall. It marks the center of the former shrine, a spot said to grant wishes. So make a wish. Who knows, with Sarutahiko-Okami’s blessing, it might just come true.
