A thousand years ago they called it Baiyun Mountain. But today we stand before the breathtaking beauty of Zhejiang’s Taohua Island Scenic Area. This isn’t just any island. It’s a jewel a place whispered about in legends.
Taohua Island boasts stunning scenery. Think rugged mountains lush forests. Imagine the glistening waters of the East China Sea lapping at its shores. This seventh largest island in the Zhoushan archipelago is a true wonder. It’s known as a “Wonderland outside the World”.
Legend speaks of An Qisheng a man who defied the emperor. He fled south seeking refuge. He found it on this very island. There he lived a life of seclusion dedicated to alchemy. One day drunk on potent wine he spilled ink onto the rocks. The ink bloomed forming a pattern like peach blossoms. Thus the stone was named Taohua Stone. The mountain Taohua Mountain. And the island itself Taohua Island.
The island’s rich history stretches back centuries. From the Song Dynasty to the Ming Dynasty it was part of Anqi Township. Later it became Anqi Taohua village. Through time it changed names. Eventually it transformed into today’s Taohua Town.
But the stories don’t end there. Taohua Island holds a special place in the heart of wuxia fans. In Jin Yong’s classic novels Legend of the Condor Heroes and The Return of the Condor Heroes the famed pharmacist Huang Yaoshi known as the “Eastern Heretic” makes his home here. His legendary skill and enigmatic personality add another layer to this island’s mystique.
The island’s beauty extends far beyond its history and legends. It has six major scenic areas. These include the Taohua Scenic Area the Kuizhu Gold Sand Scenic Area the Anqi Peak Scenic Area and the Great Buddha Rock Scenic Area. The area is also home to numerous other points of interest such as temples caves ancient relics and spectacular natural rock formations.
