“Did anyone bring their chanting voice?” a woman whispered, her eyes wide with a mix of amusement and nerves. Right in front of you stands the Hō’unji Temple, also known as Hō’unji. The temple traces its roots back to 1630. It was originally established in the Edo era by the esteemed priest Gessho. Gessho chose a location in present-day Naka Ward but the Hō’unji has seen a few moves since then. In 1727 it relocated to present-day Gion Town and then again, during the Hōreki era (1751-1764), it moved to Hachihonmatsu Town. Finally, in 1901, the temple settled in its current location. Within the temple grounds, you will find the Hakueikan Concert Hall and the Hakueikan Auditorium. They are reminders of the temple’s connection to the arts and community gatherings. Although you won’t find it written in many history books, the temple has a curious connection to the powerful Red Seal Ship owner, the Akihiro family. During the feudal period, the temple received protection from the Akihiro family. This patronage led to the inclusion of the name of a prominent Red Seal Ship owner in the temple’s records. It’s a subtle reminder that history is often a tapestry woven from unexpected connections.
