Have you ever seen a bridge shaped like a ‘T’? The Aioi Bridge right here in Hiroshima is one of the few. Look around you. Imagine for a moment the horrors that unfolded on August 6th, 1945. The Aioi Bridge, with its distinctive shape, was the intended target for the atomic bomb. The bomb slightly missed, detonating about 800 feet away over Shima Hospital. Even from that distance, the Aioi Bridge suffered severe damage. The blast warped its girders, and the handrail on the northern side was blown into the river. The bridge, a symbol of connection, found itself at the heart of unimaginable destruction. Yet, remarkably, it survived. Repaired and rebuilt after the war, it served as a poignant reminder of resilience for almost four decades. In 1983, a new Aioi Bridge was built, closely resembling the original. This newer bridge stands as a testament to peace and the enduring spirit of Hiroshima.
