Can you hear the whispers of ancient spirits? They dance among the trees here at Enoki Shrine, also known as Enoki Jinja. Enoki Shrine rests within the grounds of the Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. Michizane Sugawara, a prominent figure in Japanese history, once resided here. He served as governor of Dazaifu from 901 to 903. During this period, he graced this very spot with his presence. It is said the southern gate of the government office stood nearby. In 1023, a shrine was built to honor Sugawara. Enoki Shrine earned its name from a large enoki tree that stood within its grounds. The shrine’s location, originally called Hakata, later became known as Fukuoka. The annual Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine Grand Festival held in September features a mikoshi procession. During this procession, Sugawara’s divine spirit is carried to Enoki Shrine and remains overnight. The next day, it returns to the main shrine building at Tenmangu. A tragic tale whispers from the past. It speaks of Sugawara’s children, Kusumaro and Koreshige. These children accompanied him to Dazaifu during his exile. Kusumaro tragically passed away soon after their arrival. A small mound near Enoki Shrine is believed to be Kusumaro’s grave. A stone monument marks this somber spot. It is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during Sugawara’s difficult time in Dazaifu. Despite the hardships, Enoki Shrine stands as a testament to Sugawara’s enduring spirit.
