“A sea of color awaits.” Here at the Du鹃 Garden in Shanghai. Prepare to be amazed by a floral spectacle.

The Du鹃 Garden is a highlight of the Shanghai Botanical Garden. It is located on the northwest side of the peony garden. This garden is not just a collection of plants. It is a vibrant canvas painted with thousands of azaleas.

The Du鹃 Garden occupies 34,000 square meters. It is home to over 5,000 azaleas. These include spring, summer, Mao white, western and Yunjin azaleas.

Imagine strolling through the garden. You are surrounded by a riot of colors. The azaleas bloom in a breathtaking display. Every April to May the Du鹃 Garden welcomes its best viewing period. The densely packed flowers create layers of stunning beauty. Walking through feels like stepping into a sea of flowers.

The azalea is more than just a pretty bloom. It is one of China’s ten traditional famous flowers. Known as “the beauty of flowers” it enchants garden lovers worldwide with its rich colors and diverse forms. There are over 800 azalea species and over 30,000 varieties.

The Du鹃 Garden was established in 1976. It underwent renovation and expansion in 2009. This created the spatial layout you see today.

In recent years the garden’s specialists have enriched the azalea varieties. They have enhanced the spring scenery. Soil improvement was key. They also carefully selected upper-layer trees. The arrangement of different flower colors was important. These gardening techniques helped introduce excellent azalea varieties.

Notable azaleas include brocade azaleas, Yingshan red and Maginhua. There are also azaleas such as ‘Red Crown’, ‘Angel’, ‘Pink Sapphire’ and ‘Sweetheart’. Other varieties include Fairy Crane, Spring Poetry and Spring Tide.

Besides azaleas the garden features other plants. South of the garden is a reinforced concrete pergola. Monkey face peaches grow along it. The northwest area boasts a large persimmon forest. Nearly ten kinds of persimmon plants thrive here. The northern part mainly features plants of the wild jasmine family. This includes Corylopsis, wild jasmine, small-leaved white tree and drooping pearl flowers.

As you wander through the Du鹃 Garden note the fragrance in the air. The buzzing of bees fills your ears. Observe the intricate patterns of the petals. The Du鹃 Garden is a feast for the senses. It offers a tranquil escape from the city. Take a moment to appreciate the beauty and diversity of nature. The Du鹃 Garden is a testament to Shanghai’s horticultural expertise.
