Can you hear the distant echoes of hymns? They resonate from the very stones of Zhujiajiao Catholic Church. This church stands as a testament to faith. It has survived through turbulent times. Let’s step back in time. We will explore the history and the enduring spirit of this sacred place.

Zhujiajiao Catholic Church is located in Qingpu District. It is in Zhujiajiao town, Shanghai. The address is 317 Lane 27 Yanfang Road.

Imagine Shanghai in 1860. A small church was first built here. It was a humble beginning for what would become a significant religious landmark. Then in 1883 the church expanded. It grew into a large house of worship. The design blended Chinese and Western styles. It could accommodate 700 people. In 1909 a detached bell tower was added. Most parishioners were local fishermen.

The church originally belonged to the Taislaiqiao parish. In 1945 it became its own parish. A resident priest was assigned here.

The Cultural Revolution brought dark days. Zhujiajiao Catholic Church was closed. But faith is resilient. In 1980 the church reopened after restoration. It became the first church to reopen in suburban Shanghai after the Cultural Revolution.

Zhujiajiao Catholic Church is more than old stones. It is a symbol of perseverance. In 2004 it was listed as an immovable cultural relic in Qingpu District. By 2015 it was recognized. It became one of Shanghai’s Outstanding Historical Buildings.

Many priests have served here. In 1980 Father Wu Cai Sheng oversaw the repairs. Later Father Xue Qiusheng rededicated the church on Christmas Day.

In 1989 a statue of the Virgin Mary was built. Bishop Jin Luxian visited Zhujiajiao in 1991. He held a thanksgiving mass. By 2000 the church had baptized 1494 new members.

In 2003 Zhujiajiao Church became a parish seat again. Father Jiang Zuyue took charge. In 2004 a statue of Joseph holding Jesus was erected. The church was fully renovated that year. It regained its original splendor.

Today Zhujiajiao Catholic Church continues to be a place of worship. It welcomes all. It stands as a living reminder of faith. It shows faith’s ability to endure. Its history is etched in its walls. Its spirit lives on in its community. Remember the story of this church. It is a beacon of hope. It is a testament to the enduring power of belief.
