Born in the shadow of adversity, how did a boy from a modest two-story brick house rise to become a giant of Chinese labor rights? This, my friends, is the Zhu Xuefan Former Residence. Here, in this unassuming building in Jinshan District, Shanghai, we trace the incredible journey of Zhu Xuefan. Zhu Xuefan’s life (1905-1996) began within these walls. He was born in a time when China wrestled with poverty and weakness. From humble beginnings, he became a leading figure in the Chinese labor movement and a prominent political activist. The Zhu Xuefan Former Residence, built during the Qing Dynasty, offers a glimpse into his childhood. This traditional brick and wood structure occupies just 632 square meters. But within its modest footprint lies a powerful story. The house is laid out in a “convex” shape. It showcases Zhu Xuefan’s life and accomplishments through modern exhibits like LED screens and WeChat cloud guides. This renovated museum chronicles Zhu Xuefan’s unwavering pursuit of revolution and truth. It unfolds in five chapters: labor movement, expansion, assistance, revolution, and character. Each chapter highlights his courage, steadfast beliefs, and dedication to the revolutionary cause. The museum also reflects the progress and excellence of the Chinese path and system. It displays a heartfelt tribute from the local community, filled with deep respect and remembrance. This renewed exhibition boasts a rich collection of 1749 artifacts and documents generously donated by Zhu Xuefan’s descendants and supporters. Many of these items, including writings, letters, photos, books, and personal belongings, are on display for the first time. They offer intimate insights into his contributions to China’s labor movement, postal service, and multi-party cooperation. The Zhu Xuefan Former Residence opened to the public in 2005. Now designated as a patriotic education base and a protected cultural relic of Shanghai, it serves as a vital testament to his early revolutionary activities. This restoration is part of Jinshan District’s ongoing effort to preserve its historical and cultural heritage, keeping the spirit of its revolutionary past alive. It stands as a living classroom, offering valuable learning experiences for visitors and party members alike.
