A whisper of history echoes from the Lord Chunshen Temple. This isn’t just any temple. It stands as a testament to Huang Xie a remarkable figure of ancient China. He was a military general and a politician. He even served as Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Chu.

The Lord Chunshen Temple in Shanghai’s Songjiang District is a relatively recent reconstruction. It was rebuilt in 2002. It sits in Chunshen Village where legend says Lord Chunshen himself once resided. The temple boasts calligraphy by renowned Songjiang artists. Huang Xie known as Lord Chunshen was one of the Four Lords of the Warring States period. He was a brilliant strategist and negotiator. Lord Chunshen’s legacy extends far beyond his political achievements. He is credited with vital hydrological projects. These works improved the three rivers of Wu. They prevented floods and boosted agriculture. The Huangpu River Shanghai’s “mother river” is named after his surname Huang. It is also known as the Chunshen or Shen River. Shanghai itself is often called Shencheng the City of Shen in his honor.
