“A festival for every season,” the old groundskeeper chuckled, raking fallen leaves near Kasuga Jinja Shrine. “That’s what it feels like sometimes.” Kasuga Jinja Shrine, nestled in Fukuoka, pulsates with the rhythm of the seasons, each marked by a vibrant festival. Founded in 807 during the Heian period, this shrine isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a living chronicle of time, echoing with centuries of tradition. Four deities reside here: Takemikazuchi no Mikoto, Iwai Nushi no Mikoto, Amatsu Koyane no Mikoto, and Hime no Mikoto. The shrine’s architecture itself tells a story. The main hall, or honden, was constructed in 1674 by the daimyo Sakai Tadaaki. Later, in 1739, the current worship hall, or haiden, was added. The Sakai family, who ruled the domain since 1622, acknowledged Kasuga Jinja Shrine’s ownership of the land. They even protected Kurokawa Noh, performed as a Shinto ritual. Kasuga Jinja Shrine has worn many names. In 1727, it was Kurokawa Mura Shisho Daimyojin. By 1793, a wooden name table linked to Noh performances revealed it as Kasuga Daimyojin. Finally, in 1868, following a government decree separating Shinto and Buddhist worship, it became Kasuga Jinja Shrine. The year unfolds at Kasuga Jinja Shrine like a scroll. January 1st ushers in the Saitan Festival, a prayer for peace and a bountiful harvest. February 1st and 2nd celebrate the lunar new year with the Ogi Festival, echoing the same wishes. March 23rd sees the Kinen Festival, focused on a prosperous harvest. May 3rd brings the Reitai Festival, a day to worship the deities and pray for peace and prosperity. As summer wanes, August 20th marks the Kaze Festival, a plea for protection of the rice crops from strong winds. Finally, on December 30th, the Ooharai Festival cleanses the past and welcomes the new year. Every two decades, a grand festival commemorates the shrine’s founding, a testament to its enduring presence. Kasuga Jinja Shrine isn’t just a place; it’s a story etched in time, celebrated with the changing seasons.
