Perhaps, you have heard of the divine winds or Kamikaze. They saved Japan from Mongol invasion. But have you heard about the temple that connects to it? That is Shofuku-ji.

Shofuku-ji is not just any temple. It is Japan’s first Zen temple. Founded in 1195 by Eisai, with Minamoto no Yoritomo’s support, it marks a pivotal moment in Japanese Buddhist history.

Eisai brought the Rinzai school of Zen from Sung China. He built Shofuku-ji on the site of Hyaku-do. This chapel once housed Chinese expatriates in Hakata. Completed in 1204, Emperor Go-Toba himself gave calligraphy for its Sanmon gate. This act signified its importance.

Imagine Hakata during Shofuku-ji’s peak. Thirty-eight sub-temples surrounded seven main halls. A bustling market town called Kannai thrived within the temple grounds. Place names like Uomachi remind us of this era. Shofuku-ji also served as a diplomatic hub. Bilingual monks facilitated negotiations.

However, history tested Shofuku-ji’s resilience. Fire destroyed the temple in 1563 during the Sengoku period wars. Revived in 1570, it faced destruction again in 1574. Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s reconstruction of Hakata reduced its territory in 1587. Yet, Kobayakawa Takakage’s donation allowed rebuilding.

Originally independent, Shofuku-ji joined the Kennin-ji sect after Eisai opened Kennin-ji in Kyoto. Later, Kuroda Nagamasa made it a Myoshinji sect temple. It remains so to this day.

Notice the Sanmon gate. Legend says it came from Najima Castle. See the Chokushimon Imperial Envoy Gate. It was renovated in 1827. The Butsu-den was rebuilt in 1587. It was renovated again between 2012 and 2014. The Hojo-relocated from Hizen Nagoya Castle in 1601. Kuroda Nagamasa moved it.

Walk through the cemetery. Here lies Koki Hirota. He was the 32nd Prime Minister. Taketora Ogata a politician also rests here. Shofuku-ji stands as a historic site since 1969. Its structures tell stories of resilience. They also tell of cultural exchange. From Eisai’s vision to its role in Hakata’s development. Shofuku-ji embodies Zen’s enduring legacy.
