It stands as a testament to faith, resilience, and the enduring power of community. Nippon Sei Ko Kai, meaning “Japanese Holy Catholic Church”, is part of the Anglican Communion. The Fukuoka Bethel Church represents a small but vibrant part of this larger community. The story of Fukuoka Bethel Church begins with a remarkable woman, Fuji Komaki. Born in 1879, Fuji dedicated her life to spreading Christianity in Fukuoka. In 1924, she was officially recognized as a missionary, marking a turning point in her journey. Fuji’s ministry extended to the sick and suffering. She regularly visited patients at the National Sanatorium Minami Fukuoka Hospital. A poignant moment occurred during one of her visits. As Fuji prayed by a patient’s bedside, a hospital worker warned her not to remove her shoes. The worker explained that the ground she stood on was holy. This profound statement resonated deeply within Fuji. It sparked the idea of establishing a church on that very spot. In 1932, Fuji’s vision materialized. The “Bethel Home” was built. It served as a place of solace and spiritual guidance for those recovering from illness. A chapel within the home became a hub for worship. It attracted a growing congregation of believers and seekers. Fuji’s legacy continued even after her passing in 1959. Her adopted daughter, Mitsu, carried the torch of faith. Mitsu held services in her own home, keeping the spirit of the Bethel Home alive. Years later, in 2001, a generous donation made it possible to rebuild the church. The new Fukuoka Bethel Church stands as a tribute to Fuji Komaki’s unwavering devotion. It’s a place where people gather to celebrate their faith, find comfort in community, and continue Fuji’s mission of sharing God’s love. Today, the church thrives, hosting regular Sunday services, Bible study groups, and various community events.
