It has a vast network of smaller shrines across Japan. Imagine, over 3,800 shrines connected to this sacred place. Before it became known as Hiyoshi Taisha, people called it Hiei Taisha or Hie jinja. The shrine’s history is deeply intertwined with Enryaku-ji Temple, a powerful Buddhist temple on nearby Mount Hiei. For centuries, Shinto and Buddhist practices coexisted here. This was common in Japan until the Meiji government decreed their separation in 1868. Hiyoshi Taisha played a pivotal role in this separation, even destroying its Buddhist artifacts.
