Why is this building called Wenke Building? We’re standing before Wenke Building, a place brimming with academic energy at Shanghai University. This isn’t just any building. It’s a hub for humanities, a space where history, language, and culture intertwine. Wenke Building, home to the College of Liberal Arts, pulses with the life of over 1240 students. They delve into Chinese literature, history, and cultural studies. As of 2024, nearly 140 dedicated professors guided these students, supported by over 50 postdoctoral researchers and a dozen international faculty. Wenke Building has witnessed the evolution of Shanghai University’s humanities programs. In 1983, the university restructured. The former Fudan University Branch transformed into the Shanghai University College of Liberal Arts. This marked a significant shift, focusing on applied humanities disciplines. Wenke Building became the epicenter of this transformation. It houses nine distinct departments, covering subjects like Chinese literature, history, and even film and television. In 2017, the college underwent another reshaping, solidifying its commitment to research in Chinese language and literature, history, and political science.
