Shu Yin Lou meaning The Hermit’s Library has a fascinating past. Once the Daily Visit Garden it was transformed into a walled library complex in 1763. Lu Xixiong a retired editor built it. He lived alone surrounded by his books.

The Guo family acquired Shu Yin Lou in 1881. They were successful merchants. They lived there for generations. Guo Junlun a capable architect played a crucial role in the Yu Garden’s reconstruction in 1956. Despite this his family faced challenges maintaining Shu Yin Lou. Nationalization deprived them of income. Numerous tenants and even a factory occupied parts of the estate.

The house suffered damage over time. Architectural details were lost. Furniture and scrolls were stolen. Political slogans marred the walls. Guo Junlun fought to preserve Shu Yin Lou. He eventually regained control in the 1990s. The house was in ruins. He sought restoration help. Sadly his efforts were not entirely successful. Construction work damaged the northwestern wing.

In 2009 a visitor discovered Shu Yin Lou accidentally. The courtyard’s beauty surprised her. She met the Guo family. Qu Qi Guo Junlun’s wife played the piano and sang. The family’s story is one of resilience. It is a story of loss. They guarded this architectural gem for generations. Sadly they eventually left. The house’s future remains uncertain. It’s a poignant reminder of Shanghai’s changing landscape. It’s a powerful reminder of the past’s lasting impact.
