Have you ever felt the weight of unseen eyes upon you? Here before us stands Koshin a testament to a belief that permeates the very fabric of Fukuoka’s history. This isn’t just a shrine it is a living portal to a world where the unseen holds sway.

For centuries Koshin has represented a unique blend of Taoist Shinto and Buddhist beliefs. It’s a faith centered around the Sanshi three unseen entities that dwell within each of us. These Sanshi meticulously record our actions good and bad. Every sixty days on a night known as Koshin-Machi they journey to Tentei the Heavenly God. There they deliver a report influencing our fate.

Imagine the pressure the fear of this divine judgment. This is the core of the Koshin faith. To avoid the wrath of Tentei believers would stay awake on these crucial nights. They would pray and chant hoping to prevent the Sanshi from leaving. Their vigil a testament to their hope for a life free of divine punishment.

The practice wasn’t always somber. By the Edo period Koshin-Machi had evolved. Festivities accompanied the nightly vigil transforming it into a community event. Many deities entered the faith. Shoumen-Kongou a fearsome blue-faced deity with multiple arms became a significant figure. People sought his intervention hoping he would somehow incapacitate the Sanshi.

Notice the intricate carvings some depicting Shoumen-Kongou others with the Three Wise Monkeys. Their message is clear. See no evil hear no evil speak no evil. A powerful visual reminder of the importance of virtuous conduct. These motifs were crafted onto Koshin-to stone markers found throughout Japan. They serve as silent reminders of this fascinating belief.

Even today the Koshin faith lingers though greatly diminished. Many Koshin-to remain alongside roads or within the grounds of temples. They stand as poignant reminders of a past where the invisible ruled and the present where our choices resonate.
