Whispers from students echo through the halls of Hiroshima City Motomachi High School. This public co-educational high school is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a place of learning and growth.

Hiroshima City Motomachi High School was founded in 1988. This makes it the last high school established in Hiroshima Prefecture during the Showa era. In 1986, Hiroshima Prefecture and Hiroshima City agreed to build a new municipal high school in Asakita Ward. Construction started in October that year. By April 1987, the school had established a preparatory office.

The name Hiroshima City Motomachi High School was officially decided in September 1987. The Hiroshima Prefectural Board of Education approved its establishment the following month. The school’s preparatory office opened in January 1988 at Hiroshima Municipal Itsukaichi Junior High School. The opening ceremony took place in April 1988. In 2001, Hiroshima City Motomachi High School established an international science course. However, recruitment for this course stopped in 2012.

The school’s motto is advancement, friendship and moderation. It offers a full-day curriculum with a credit system. Students follow a three-term academic year. The school has a general course. The international science course is no longer recruiting students.

Many notable figures have graduated from Hiroshima City Motomachi High School. These include sports stars like Mami Uramizu, a former basketball player. Other alumni include cyclist Miyoko Karami, who competed in the Athens Olympics. Several business leaders are also alumni. Takashi Mizuno is the president of AdLink. Ryoei Kimura is the president of F.D.K. Tomomi Matsumoto leads Stage Union Hiroshima. Yasuko Shizuyama is president of Bunko Daikoki.基修 Nakai is president of Nishihiroshima Ricoh Leasing. Tomoaki Matsuda is the president of Mitsuya Taxi. Yukimichi Hisabo is the president of Kowa Shoji. Takumi Sakamoto is the president of Misuzu Zoen. Shito Kimura leads Kiura Shoten. Kazuo Fukuda is the president of ISSEI HD.

Hiroshima City Motomachi High School is located in Asakita Ward. Its address is 13-1 Midorigaoaka, Midori 2-chome. The school is accessible by Hiroshima Electric Railway bus. The nearest bus stop is “Motomachi High School”.
