Eyes scanning the horizon, I remember the words of a Hiroshima local: “Did you know Hiroshima has a police station unlike any other?”. He was talking about the Hiroshima Kita Police Station (広島北警察署), a vital part of Hiroshima’s safety net. The Hiroshima Kita Police Station stands as a relatively new addition to Hiroshima’s landscape, opening its doors on April 1, 2008. It was established to alleviate the burden on the Hiroshima Higashi Police Station. The Higashi station’s jurisdiction had become too large due to rapid population growth and high population density in northern Hiroshima. The Hiroshima Kita Police Station oversees the northern part of Hiroshima City and the entire area of Jinsekikogen Town. Interestingly, it’s the only police station in eastern Hiroshima Prefecture equipped with a shooting range. Before the station’s construction, police services in the area were handled by the Kamijima Koban, a smaller police box. However, as the city grew, the need for a larger, dedicated facility became apparent. Land was acquired in Kamijima Town as part of a road improvement project completed in 2005. The station’s construction was subsequently budgeted for and completed. Now, the Hiroshima Kita Police Station serves a crucial role, ensuring the safety and security of a significant portion of Hiroshima. It’s a symbol of the city’s commitment to modern policing and a testament to its growth.
