Gazing upon Fukuoka City Maidashi Elementary School, can you hear the echoes of children’s laughter from generations past? This seemingly ordinary school holds a captivating history, deeply intertwined with the growth of Fukuoka City. Fukuoka City Maidashi Elementary School, originally a branch of Hakozaki Island Elementary School, opened its doors in 1900 in the village of Maidashi. The school gained independence in 1908, becoming Maidashi Island Elementary School. As the school expanded its curriculum, it was renamed Maidashi Island Higher Elementary School in 1912. With the merger of Maidashi Village into Fukuoka City in 1928, the school became a part of the city’s educational system. Later, the higher department separated, and the school reverted to its former name in 1937. The winds of change continued to blow, and in 1941, under the National School Ordinance, it was christened Maidashi National School. Finally, with the post-war educational reforms of 1947, it adopted its current name: Fukuoka City Maidashi Elementary School. Interestingly, the current location of Fukuoka City Maidashi Elementary School once housed the Fukuoka City Zoo, established in 1933. Sadly, the zoo closed its gates in 1944 due to the escalating Pacific War. The land then became home to Fukuoka Junior High School until 1983. Fukuoka City Maidashi Elementary School moved to this historic site in 1984. As a fascinating reminder of the past, the original entrance gate of the zoo still stands on the school grounds. Even the zoo’s pond remains, a unique feature for an elementary school. Fukuoka City Maidashi Elementary School’s journey reflects the changing times and the community’s enduring commitment to education.
