“Kego Elementary, truly a school with a story,” a young student whispers, pointing at the Fukuoka City Kego Elementary School. Fukuoka City Kego Elementary School, or 警固小学校 as it’s known locally, stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Fukuoka. It has witnessed the city’s transformation from a collection of small villages to the vibrant metropolis it is today. Originally, in 1886, three smaller schools—Akamatsu, Wakamiya, and Yakuen—merged to form Yakuen Elementary. Imagine young children from different villages, now united under one roof. Over the years, Fukuoka City Kego Elementary School has seen its name and purpose shift. In 1889, it became Kegojima Elementary School. Later, in 1941, national decrees led to it being renamed Kego National School. A split occurred in 1943, with some students transferring to Hirao National School, now Hirao Elementary. Finally, with post-war educational reforms in 1947, it adopted its current name: Fukuoka City Kego Elementary School. The school stands within the heart of Fukuoka’s Chuo Ward. It’s just a short walk from Yakuin Station and easily accessible via several transportation routes. Picture yourself in the early 20th century, the clatter of streetcars mingling with the excited chatter of students making their way to Kego. Today, the school continues to serve the community. As of 2020, it had 22 regular classes and two special support classes, fostering a diverse learning environment for over 700 students. Fukuoka City Kego Elementary School is more than bricks and mortar. It is a living archive, echoing with the laughter and lessons of generations past. It’s a symbol of community and growth, standing proudly in the heart of Fukuoka.
