In 1890, a seed was planted. This seed was the Wakiyama Elementary School, initially known as Wakiyama Island Ordinary Elementary School. Wakiyama Elementary School, nestled in the heart of Fukuoka’s Sawara Ward, has witnessed the passage of time and the growth of its community. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of learning. Let’s journey back to the Meiji era, when the foundations of modern Japan were being laid. Wakiyama Elementary School first opened its doors, offering education to the children of the area. In 1912, a higher department was added, expanding the school’s reach. The school flourished in its original location until 1930 when it moved to its present site. The school building we see today is a product of this era. As Japan navigated the turbulent waters of the 20th century, so did Wakiyama Elementary. In 1941, amidst the global conflict, it was renamed Wakiyama National School. With the post-war reforms of 1947, it became Wakiyama Village Wakiyama Elementary School. Then, in 1956, as Sawara Town took shape, it adopted the name Sawara Town Wakiyama Elementary School. Finally, in 1975, with the merger of Sawara Town into Fukuoka City, it received its current name: Fukuoka City Wakiyama Elementary School. Through all these changes, Wakiyama Elementary School remained a beacon of education for the community. In 2006, it nurtured 113 students, each carrying the torch of knowledge into the future. The school’s attendance zone encompasses various areas within Sawara Ward, including Wakiyama 1 and 2 Chome, Oji Wakiyama, Ojiitayado, Oji Kojayagi, and Oji Hagihara. Located in the southeastern part of Sawara Ward, the school enjoys a peaceful setting in the western part of the Fukuoka Plain. Surrounded by rice paddies and residential areas, it offers a tranquil learning environment. The southern part of the school district is bordered by Mount Raijin, while the north is embraced by the gentle slopes of Mount Abura and Mount Arahira. Route 136 runs alongside Wakiyama Elementary School. Route 56 crosses east to west to the north, connecting the school to the wider city. Graduates of Wakiyama Elementary typically continue their education at Sawara Junior High School.
