Originally, the school was called Ono Junior High School. It was attached to Ono Elementary School. In 1948, the school moved to Shirakibaru. The school bought a factory site. This provided more space for the growing student body.

In 1950, Ono Village became Ono Town. The school’s name changed to Ono Town Ono Junior High School. The school continued to expand. A three-story steel building was completed in 1957. It had eighteen classrooms. More classrooms were added in 1961 and 1962.

Student numbers increased in 1971. Ono East Junior High School was newly established. This helped to alleviate overcrowding. The original school building was renovated in 1972.

In 1972, Ono Town became Onojo City. The school’s name changed again. It became Onojo City Ono Junior High School. Ono Junior High School continued to grow. Dairi Junior High School was established in 1976.

A gymnasium was completed in 1978. The schoolyard was renovated in 1979. In 1986, the boys’ basketball team excelled. They won the prefectural tournament. They placed second in the Kyushu tournament. They even competed in the national tournament.

A new school building was constructed in 1990 and 1991. The school moved to the new building in 1991. A rooftop pool was added. An OA room opened. The schoolyard was fully renovated.

The school celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1996. A clock tower was installed. The school’s educational goals are health, respect, and autonomy.

Onojo City Ono Junior High School serves a specific area. Students come from Asahi Town, Ishida, and Kasuga原. They also come from Shirakibaru and Chu Central.
