Established in 1948, the Fukuoka City Mitsuzawa Junior High School wasn’t always known by its current name. Initially, it was called the Nanasan-mura, Yawata-mura, and Haruhi-mura Joint Mitsuzawa Junior High School. This mouthful reflected the three villages that jointly founded the school: Nanasan-mura (now part of Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City), Yawata-mura (now part of Minami Ward, Fukuoka City), and Haruhi-mura (now Haruhi City). The school was established on the site of a former Kyushu Airplane Youth School. Imagine those early students, walking the same halls where aspiring pilots once trained. Fukuoka City Mitsuzawa Junior High School is situated in Hakata Ward, a stone’s throw from both the JR Kagoshima Main Line and the Nishitetsu Tenjin Omuta Line. This makes it easily accessible from both Sasabaru Station and Kasugabaru Station. The school’s motto centers on three core tenets: an ideal student image, an ideal teacher image, and an ideal school image. These ideals are underpinned by the school’s principles of “creativity, diligence, and courtesy.” Fukuoka City Mitsuzawa Junior High School has a fascinating history tied to the changing landscape of Fukuoka itself. In 1953, Haruhi-mura became Haruhi Town. The school’s name was then adjusted to reflect this change. Later, in 1954, Yawata-mura merged with Fukuoka City. This led to yet another name change, and the school became temporarily jointly administered by Fukuoka City and Haruhi Town. In 1955, Nanasan-mura also merged into Fukuoka City. The school continued as a joint establishment until 1958. Finally, it adopted its current name, Fukuoka City Mitsuzawa Junior High School. The school has seen several relocations. In 1960, it moved to the site currently occupied by Mitsuzawa Elementary School. In 1979, it relocated again. Finally, it settled at its present location. Over the years, Fukuoka City Mitsuzawa Junior High School has nurtured many notable individuals. Among its alumni are Hirota Koichi, a former mayor of Fukuoka and visiting professor at Kwansei Gakuin University. Takeo Wakatsuki, the vocalist for the popular band “Seamo,” also attended Mitsuzawa.
