Legend says Yue Fei had four characters tattooed on his back. These characters read “serve the country with the utmost loyalty.” Some say his mother gave him the tattoo. She wanted to ensure his unwavering loyalty. She feared unworthy people might tempt him after her death. So she tattooed the words on his back with ink mixed with vinegar. She ensured the color would never fade.
