Carved into the stone a silent story unfolds. This is the Iwaya Castle Stele. It stands as a testament to a fierce battle a pivotal moment in Japanese history.

The Iwaya Castle Stele memorializes a siege that occurred in 1586. Iwaya Castle a mountain stronghold was besieged by the powerful Shimazu clan. Their goal was to conquer Kyushu. The castle was defended by Takahashi Shigetane and his son. They commanded a force of around 760 men. They faced a massive Shimazu army of almost 50000 soldiers.

The stele speaks of a valiant defense. Shigetane and his men fought bravely for two weeks. They held out against overwhelming odds. However the inevitable arrived. Knowing further resistance was futile Shigetane chose a samurai’s death. He committed suicide.

The Shimazu clan impressed by Shigetane’s bravery are said to have prayed for his spirit. Despite the castle’s fall the Shimazu suffered significant losses. This prolonged their campaign. Toyotomi Hideyoshi seized Kyushu the following year. He prevented the Shimazu from completing their conquest.
