Enshrined in the heart of Hiroshima, the Okubi-jinja Shrine, or 尾首日吉神社 as it’s known locally, rests on a hillside. This Okubi-jinja Shrine wasn’t always here. Originally, it graced the slopes of Mount Ryuo. It began as a branch of the Hie Shrine from Ehime Prefecture, dedicated to the mountain deity, Yama-no-kami. The Okubi-jinja Shrine thrived for a time. Then, after the fall of Ginyama Castle, it was abandoned. Time passed, and the shrine was resurrected in its present location, ‘Okubi’ meaning ‘the back of the head or neck’. In the year 1802, the shrine buildings were reconstructed. Now, the Okubi-jinja Shrine observes the changing seasons with vibrant festivals. Every April, the air buzzes with the excitement of the insect-sending festival. Then, in October, the community gathers for the rich harvest festival. The Okubi-jinja Shrine, also known as Yama-no-kami, continues to watch over Hiroshima, a silent witness to the city’s resilience and rebirth.
