“An act of bravery or a terrorist attack?” That question still echoes around 尹奉吉义举现场. This place is a memorial to Yun Bong-gil. He was a Korean independence activist.

Let’s delve into the story behind this memorial. It’s a story of resistance during the Japanese occupation of Korea. From 1910 to 1945 Korea was under Japanese rule. Many Koreans sought independence.

Yun Bong-gil was one of those people. Born in 1908 he witnessed the March 1st Movement. This movement protested Japanese rule. Appalled by the repression he initially promoted education and activism. He became disillusioned with the Japanese suppression. In 1930 Yun left his family to join the Korean Provisional Government. It was a government in exile.

He became a militant.

In Shanghai Yun worked with Kim Ku. Kim led the Korean Patriotic Organization. They planned an attack on Japanese leaders. April 29 1932 was the date. A rally honored Japanese Emperor Hirohito’s birthday. It occurred in Hongkou Park now Lu Xun Park. Thousands gathered for a Japanese troop parade. Japanese officials were on a decorated stage.

Just before the Japanese national anthem finished Yun threw a bomb. The explosion killed General Yoshinori Shirakawa. It also killed Kawabata Teiji. He was head of the Japanese Residents’ Association of Shanghai. Several others were wounded.

Yun attempted to detonate a second bomb to kill himself. It failed. He was arrested and beaten.

Yun was sentenced to death. He was executed in Japan on December 19 1932.

After the attack Japanese and French police interrogated Koreans. The Korean Provisional Government gained respect. Chinese leader Chiang Kai-shek began supporting them. Yun is now viewed as a martyr in South Korea and China.

This memorial at 尹奉吉义举现场 stands as a reminder. It is a reminder of a complex history. Was Yun a hero or a terrorist? That question sparks debate still. It depends on perspective. Regardless his actions had a profound impact. They helped shape the course of Korean independence.
