“Respect intellectual lane”. That’s what Shang Xian Fang means. A name imbued with history. A history woven into the very bricks of this Shanghai lane house.
Shang Xian Fang is more than just a residential compound. It’s a living testament to Shanghai’s blend of East and West. It stands opposite the Shanghai Central Plaza. This plaza was once the Municipal Council Building of the French Concession.
This elegant compound began as the Shang Xian Tang. American missionary Gilbert Reid founded this International Institute in 1903. Wealthy Chinese tycoons funded it. It offered classes in English business law and politics. It also hosted events for Western chambers of commerce. Reid was a forward-thinking missionary. He fostered connections with Shanghai’s elite. Shang Xian Tang became a gathering place for progress and collaboration.
In 1924 a real estate company built Shang Xian Fang. They constructed it on the institute’s grounds. The compound comprises three rows of 52 lane houses. They are narrow just 3.6 meters wide but surprisingly deep up to 15 meters.
Imagine stepping through the elegant gate. It’s a world apart. Clothes and sheets hang drying everywhere. A man hurries by carrying a chamber pot. It’s a glimpse of daily life in a Huaihai Road neighborhood. A stark contrast to the modern luxury of nearby Xintiandi.
The architecture itself is a fascinating mix. The red brick walls and Baroque details are typical of late shikumen style. Shikumen is a unique blend of Chinese and Western styles. It was a clever solution to Shanghai’s space constraints. Traditional Chinese houses were jammed together in a Western townhouse layout.
Shang Xian Fang’s legacy goes beyond architecture. It is linked to the famous Chinese writer Yu Dafu. In January 1927 he visited his classmate Sun Baigang. There he met and fell in love with Wang Yingxia. They married in 1928. Their romance is woven into the lane’s history.
Today Shang Xian Fang is a mix of old and new. While some buildings have been renovated many residents remain. They continue the everyday rhythm of life. You can still see glimpses of Shanghai’s past old bicycles and bamboo chairs.
