“Nine. Thirteen. Start the revolt.” Imagine those numbers echoing through Shanghai. That was the signal. We are standing before the Xiaonanmen Bell Tower. It is more than just an old structure. It is a symbol of revolution.
The Xiaonanmen Bell Tower stands tall. It is at 581 Zhonghua Road. This tower once watched over the old city. It was built in 1909. The tower was Shanghai’s first fire alarm lookout. This concrete and steel tower was the highest building in Shanghai.
Before 1905, Shanghai had no official fire department. Fires were fought by officers and local groups. But Shanghai grew quickly. Volunteers could not handle the fire risk alone. Locals created fire brigades.
In 1907, city leaders proposed a new fire service. Li Pingshu and others joined together. They formed the Shanghai Fire Association. The association built its headquarters. It was near the Xiaonanmen Gate. Three years later, they added the bell tower.
Zhu Zhaozhai designed the Xiaonanmen Bell Tower. It stood 35.2 meters high. The tower had six levels and a lookout. A large bell hung on the fourth level. A special hammer rang the alarm. Its sound traveled for miles. The tower was the city’s watchful guardian.
The association divided the city into fire districts. Each district had a specific bell code. Twenty-five rings meant fire. Pauses and additional rings signaled the location. One ring meant Zhaojia浜. Two meant north of Zhaojia浜. The Xiaonanmen Bell Tower helped to save lives and property.
In 1911, revolution swept through China. Chen Qimei and others planned a revolt in Shanghai. On November 3rd, the tower bell rang out. Nine rings then thirteen. This signaled the start of the Shanghai Uprising.
The Xiaonanmen Bell Tower called revolutionaries to action. Fighters gathered in the city. They attacked government buildings. The tower became a beacon of hope. It represented the end of the Qing Dynasty.
