Whispers of ancient deities echo through the trees surrounding Kamado Shrine. Here, at the foot of Mount Hōman, a sacred energy permeates the air. Kamado Shrine is more than just a place of worship. It is a portal to a time when emperors and empresses sought divine guidance. Kamado Shrine was founded in 664 AD by Emperor Tenji. He built a water-bound castle and moved Dazaifu’s authority to the Tōfurō Ruins. This was a strategic move after his defeat in the Battle of Baekgang. Emperor Tenji dedicated Kamado Shrine to the myriad gods of Mount Hōman. The mountain, facing an unlucky direction, required spiritual appeasement. Kamado Shrine consists of two sanctuaries. One nestles at the mountain’s base, the other perches atop Mount Hōman. A third sanctuary once existed midway up the slope, but only ruins remain. The upper sanctuary honors Tamayori-hime. Legend says she appeared to the monk Shinren during his ascetic training in 683 AD. Today, Kamado Shrine is a haven for those seeking love. Wooden plaques, called “ema,” carry written prayers for romantic fulfillment. Young women flock here, hoping for blessings in love. The shrine also serves as a starting point for hikers ascending Mount Hōman. The mountain’s beauty, especially during cherry blossom season and autumn foliage, draws nature lovers and pilgrims alike. Kamado Shrine is a place of contrasts. It blends ancient history with modern desires, spiritual significance with natural splendor. A visit here is a journey through time and a testament to the enduring power of belief.
