Hidden amidst the vibrant tapestry of Fukuoka, Kamado Shrine rests at the foot of Mount Homan, a mountain revered as sacred since ancient times. Did the mountain itself whisper secrets to those who dared to climb its slopes? We stand now where emperors once trod. Kamado Shrine honors not one, but three significant figures: the goddess Tamayori Hime no Mikoto, Emperor Ojin, and his mother, Empress Jingu. Emperor Tenchi, after his defeat at the Battle of Baekgang in 664 AD, sought solace and divine protection. He established Kamado Shrine, dedicating it to the myriad deities of Mount Homan. This act transformed the mountain, once considered to face an unlucky direction, into a sacred sanctuary. Kamado Shrine isn’t confined to a single location. Two sanctuaries remain: one here at the base of the mountain and another perched upon its peak. A third sanctuary, midway up the mountain, now exists only as ruins, a silent testament to the passage of time. The upper sanctuary, reached by a winding path, holds a special significance for those seeking love. It commemorates the appearance of Tamayori no Hime to the monk Shinren during his ascetic training in 683 AD. Today, it’s a popular destination for young women seeking a love connection, their hopes and dreams written on “ema” plaques, offered to the goddess. Kamado Shrine is more than a place of worship. It’s a place where nature’s beauty intertwines with human devotion. In spring, cherry blossoms paint the mountainside in delicate hues. Autumn brings a fiery tapestry of fall foliage. Whether you seek spiritual solace, romantic blessings, or simply a moment of tranquility, Kamado Shrine offers a glimpse into the heart of Japanese culture and history.
