Picture this a grand stele proudly standing. This is the Official Small Shrine Sumiyoshi Shrine stele in Fukuoka Japan. Its presence speaks volumes about the shrine’s rich history. It’s a testament to its enduring legacy.

The Sumiyoshi Shrine is a significant Shinto shrine. It’s located in the Sumiyoshi neighborhood of Hakata-ku Fukuoka. This shrine holds immense cultural importance. It’s the ichinomiya of the former Chikuzen Province. The main festival is celebrated annually on October 13.

This isn’t just any shrine. It’s one of the “Three Great Sumiyoshi” shrines. The others are the more famous Sumiyoshi-taisha in Osaka and the Sumiyoshi Jinja in Shimonoseki Yamaguchi. Its legend claims it’s the birthplace of the Sumiyoshi cult. The shrine’s origins are shrouded in mystery. However local lore and archaeological evidence offer clues. Bronze spears and swords from the Yayoi period were unearthed on the grounds. This suggests a sacred site for the Nakoku or Amabe maritime tribes. The alluvial land of the Naka River made the location ideal. It was a perfect spot for a deity of navigation.

The Sumiyoshi Shrine’s first documented appearance is in the Shoku Nihongi. This entry dates back to April 737. Offerings were made to “Chikushi Sumiyoshi” and Ise Grand Shrine. This was in response to disrespectful acts from the Silla kingdom in Korea. A survey in 806 recorded 36 Sumiyoshi shrines in Chikuzen Province. Monks Ennin and Enchin visited in 847 and 852 respectively. Their visits followed their return from Tang China. The Imperial Court offered direct protection in 878. This followed an oracle at Kashii-gu warning of a possible Silla attack. The shrine is listed in the Engishiki as a Myojin Taisha. In 1019 it received a “once-in-a-generation” offering entrusted to Emperor Go-Ichijo.

The stele before you stands as a silent witness. It silently observes centuries of devotion. War ravaged the shrine in 1480. Its records and old documents were lost. They were taken to Yamaguchi by Ouchi Yoshitaka and destroyed in 1551. Kuroda Nagamasa the first daimyo of Fukuoka Domain restored the shrine in 1623. Subsequent rulers continued supporting the shrine until the Meiji restoration. In 1872 the Meiji government ranked it as a Prefectural Shrine. It was later promoted to an Imperial shrine 3rd rank in 1925. This is what the stele celebrates.

Archaeological digs from 2004-2014 uncovered medieval and early modern period remains. These remains included ritual artifacts. The shrine’s honden the main hall is a National Important Cultural Property. It was built in 1623 by Kuroda Nagamasa. It’s constructed in the Sumiyoshi-zukuri style. This style is considered an older form of shrine architecture. The vermilion pillars and white walls are stunning. They are also a testament to the shrine’s enduring beauty.

This stele is more than a stone. It’s a symbol of resilience. It’s a reminder of faith. It’s a symbol of the enduring spirit of the Sumiyoshi Shrine. Stand before it. Let its story fill you with wonder.
