Madam Song’s elegant presence still graces the Song Family Garden, doesn’t it? Here at 369 West Nanjing Road in Shanghai, the Song Family Garden, also known as the Song Residence, whispers stories of a remarkable family and a nation’s transformation. Originally built in 1908 for a British man named John Isal, this English countryside villa, with its black bamboo fence and European charm, became the Song family’s sanctuary in 1918. After Pastor Song Jiaru’s passing, his wife, Ni Guizhen, purchased the residence, seeking solace and a new beginning for her family. It was within these walls, in the west wing’s ground floor parlor, that Soong Mei-ling’s and Chiang Kai-shek’s wedding ceremony took place on December 1, 1927. The Christian ceremony, an intimate gathering, marked the start of a union that would shape China’s destiny. A more traditional celebration followed at the Grand Hotel, with over a thousand guests bearing witness. The Song Family Garden played host to many significant gatherings. Ni Guizhen and her children frequently met within its walls. Political figures and military officials often graced the residence, their discussions weaving into the house’s very fabric. Years later, in 1931, Ni Guizhen passed away in Qingdao. Her body was brought back to the Song Family Garden, where a farewell ceremony was held amidst the blooming flowers. The garden, a place of life and celebration, became a place of mourning and remembrance. In March 1949, Soong Ching-ling brought over a hundred orphans to the Song Family Garden, offering them shelter and care. On July 24th, she established the China Welfare Fund Nursery within the residence. This was the first nursery established after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Later, the Song Family Garden witnessed different purposes, serving as offices and living quarters. Yet, its historical significance remained. In 2005, it was designated as an Excellent Historical Building in Shanghai, solidifying its legacy as a testament to a family’s enduring impact on China’s history. The Song Family Garden has seen renovations, changes in ownership, and even controversy regarding its accessibility. Yet, its black bamboo fence still stands, guarding the echoes of weddings, funerals, and the birth of a nation’s welfare system.
