Established in 1947, Dazaifu City Gakugyoin Junior High School has witnessed decades of Dazaifu’s vibrant history. Originally, the school utilized a portion of the former Miyazato Higher Girls’ School building. It began as the Dazaifu Town Water Town Village School Jointly Established Gakugyoin Junior High School. In 1949, the land and buildings of Miyazato Girls’ Commercial School were donated to the town by Miyazato Yoshihide, the former principal. This contribution significantly shaped the future of Gakugyoin Junior High School. With the implementation of the new town system in 1955, the school became Dazaifu Town Gakugyoin Junior High. Later, with the city system enactment in 1982, it finally adopted its current name: Dazaifu City Gakugyoin Junior High School. The school stands as a testament to the town’s, and later city’s, commitment to education. The name “Gakugyoin” itself has a rich historical connection to the Dazaifu government’s training school for officials, which existed from 754 until the mid-11th century. Even now, remnants of this historical past can be found. Look towards the east, near the Kanzeonji Temple. You can almost imagine the ancient school grounds. Dazaifu City Gakugyoin Junior High School isn’t just a place of learning. It’s a living link to centuries of history. Today, the school buzzes with the energy of over 750 students, as of 2006 data. They walk the same ground where aspiring officials once prepared for service. The school embraces its rich past. It continues to nurture future generations within the historically significant landscape of Dazaifu.
