Beneath a canopy of ancient camphor trees, nestled within the serene grounds of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, lies Tenkai Inari Daimyojin. This Inari shrine, while less frequented than its famous neighbor, holds a special significance. It’s known as Kyushu’s premier Inari shrine for good fortune. Tenkai Inari Daimyojin whispers tales of prosperity and blessings. Its history dates back to the late Kamakura Period. It was established to share the Inari deity enshrined within Kyoto’s Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine. Much like its Kyoto counterpart, Tenkai Inari Daimyojin boasts a vibrant display of vermilion torii gates. These gates beckon visitors to journey deeper into the sacred grounds. The path winds upward, leading to a small Haiden worship hall. Here, amidst a tranquil garden of hydrangeas, a unique ritual awaits. Twelve bells, each inscribed with a Chinese zodiac animal, stand on either side of the hall. Visitors seek out the bell corresponding to their zodiac sign. They ring it, followed by the large central bell. A silent prayer or wish completes the ceremony. Tenkai Inari Daimyojin is a hidden gem within Dazaifu Tenmangu’s sprawling complex. It offers a moment of quiet reflection and a chance to seek blessings for good fortune. The journey to this shrine, though short, is a symbolic passage through vibrant gates and up ancient stone steps, offering a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Japanese spiritual traditions.
