Consider this a journey back to the Kamakura era. We are standing before Tenkai Inari Daimyojin. This Inari Shrine is steeped in history and spiritual significance. It resides within the grounds of the renowned Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine in Fukuoka Prefecture.
Dazaifu Tenmangu honors Sugawarano Michizane. He was a famous scholar. While many flock to the grand Dazaifu Tenmangu, Tenkai Inari Shrine offers a unique and quieter experience.
Tenkai Inari Daimyojin is known as Kyushu’s number one Inari shrine for good fortune. Its origins trace back to the latter part of the Kamakura Period. It shares its Inari deity with Kyoto’s Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine.
Notice the many vermilion torii gates reminiscent of Fushimi Inari Taisha. These gates lead us to a small Haiden worship hall. Beautiful hydrangeas adorn the garden.
Take a look at the 12 bells on each side. Each bell bears a Chinese eto zodiac name. Visitors find their zodiac bell and ring it. Then they ring the large bell in the center. After this, they offer a prayer or wish. It is a unique and personal way to connect with the divine.
Tenkai Inari Shrine stands on a small mountain. It is northeast of Dazaifu Tenmangu’s main shrine. Follow the path from Tenmangu. You will see Oishi chaya tea shop.
Climb the long stairs. At the top, you’ll discover Tenkai Inari. This is Kyushu’s oldest Inari shrine. It was built during the Kamakura era.
After visiting the main shrine, ascend to Okunoin. A small stone shrine creates a mysterious atmosphere. This spiritual place allows you to connect with nature.
It’s said that Tenkai Inari is Dazaifu Tenmangu’s Kimon seal. The shrine enshrines a deity of commercial success. It also brings good fortune.
The prayer method here differs. You ring one of twelve zodiac bells. Then you ring the main bell. Venture beyond the main hall. Discover the inner sanctuary. It sits within a cave-like enclosure.
It is a unique spiritual site. Many consider this shrine one of Fukuoka’s power spots. The cave-like stone chamber exudes a unique atmosphere. Though some think it’s an ancient tomb, it was likely built about 50 years ago.
Whether ancient or more recent, the unique atmosphere remains. The small space allows for intimate prayers. Fox statues adorn the altar, adding to the mystique.
From here, one can see the Dazaifu Yuenchi amusement park. Take a moment to appreciate the blending of spirituality and everyday life.
