Why is Tenpaizan called “heaven worship”? Here, in the heart of Chikushino, Fukuoka, Tenpaizan stands as a testament to a legend. It’s a tale woven into the very fabric of this mountain. Tenpaizan, a relatively easy climb, offers a connection to Sugawara no Michizane. This prominent figure was demoted to Dazaifu in 901. Legend says he purified himself at Shito Falls, then spent seven days and seven nights atop Tenpaizan. There, he prayed for innocence. It’s this very act of heaven worship that gave Tenpaizan its name. The mountain’s history adds another layer to its allure. Before it was cloaked in trees, Tenpaizan was bare. Kuroda Nagamasa, a feudal lord, is credited with its transformation. He initiated a massive planting project that covered the entire mountain in lush greenery. Now, Tenpaizan welcomes hikers of all skill levels. The main path is well-maintained, easily navigable without special equipment. Yet, the climb retains a sense of adventure. The trail steepens after the eighth station, marked by 354 steps. For those seeking a deeper connection to the mountain’s past, Tenpaizan offers more. There’s the “Path of the Emperor,” the “Circular Route of Manjo Castle.” Each path winds through the trees, interspersed with poetry stones. These stones bear verses from Sugawara no Michizane. They allow hikers to walk in his footsteps, to experience his longing for justice. The summit rewards climbers with panoramic views of Chikushino and beyond. On clear days, even the Fukuoka Dome and Fukuoka Tower are visible. Tenpaizan is more than a mountain. It’s a place where history, nature, and legend intertwine. It’s a destination where visitors can climb towards the heavens, just as Sugawara no Michizane did centuries ago.
