It is said that in 690 AD monk Faming presented the “Great Cloud Sutra”. This sutra proclaimed Wu Zetian as an incarnation of Maitreya Buddha. She was destined to rule as a divine empress. This endorsement led Wu Zetian to decree that Great Cloud Temples be built in every prefecture.
Originally named Jingzhong Temple, Dayun Temple was established in 964 AD. A generous devotee named Li Derong donated land. The temple was renamed Dayun Temple in 1065 during the Song Dynasty. Over time Dayun Temple became a vital spiritual hub. The area around it prospered. The temple’s influence even led to the town’s name changing to Dayun.
Imagine the scene. Pilgrims arrive. Incense smoke drifts. Monks chant. The temple flourished during the Song Dynasty. It attracted countless visitors. This popularity spurred growth. A town formed around the temple. The temple’s presence shaped the community. In 1935 the town officially became Dayun.
The temple complex includes several important buildings. The Hall of the Heavenly Kings greets visitors first. It leads to the Grand Hall. Further on is the Great Compassion Hall. The temple also features halls dedicated to various figures. These include the Hall of King Shi, the Three Sage Hall and guest rooms. On the west side are halls for Zhunti and Guan Di.

Today Dayun Temple is led by Master Yuanzhuang. He was born in Anhui Province in 1978. He became a monk in 2004. He studied at Emei Mountain Buddhist College. In 2013 he became the abbot of Dayun Temple. Master Yuanzhuang is dedicated to spreading Buddhist teachings. He actively promotes charitable activities. He inspires followers to purify their hearts. He encourages them to seek enlightenment.
