Jingling through the ages, the sacred hymns of Jingling Church, also known as 基督教景灵堂, have echoed since its rebirth in 1980. Originally named Jinglin Church (景林堂) in 1924, it stands as a testament to resilience and spiritual revival in Shanghai. This church, located on Kunshan Road, has witnessed a fascinating interplay of faith, history, and cultural shifts. Initially built in 1922-1923 by the Southern Methodist Episcopal Church, it was their second church in Shanghai. It served the faculty and students of the Anglo-Chinese College. This institution later merged with Soochow University, transforming the area into a hub of legal and secondary education. The church’s namesake, Young J. Allen, a renowned missionary, played a pivotal role in its early development. He had acquired the land north of Suzhou Creek in the Shanghai International Settlement, laying the groundwork for this spiritual landmark. Jingling Church’s impressive three-story structure, with its Gothic arched windows, could accommodate over 1,000 people. It quickly became one of Shanghai’s largest churches. Tragedy struck in 1937 with the outbreak of the Battle of Shanghai. Jingling Church, caught in the crossfire, was occupied by Japanese forces. Many congregants fled to the International Settlement south of Suzhou Creek, establishing a branch known as Jingwen Church. After the war, Jingling Church resumed services at its original location. However, the tumultuous years of the Cultural Revolution from 1966 brought about its closure and significant damage to its interior. Reopening its doors in 1979 marked a new chapter for Jingling Church. The growing congregation soon outgrew the smaller Zhibei Church. In 1980, services were transferred back to the more spacious Jingling Church, revitalizing its role as a spiritual sanctuary in Shanghai. Jingling Church was then renamed Jingling Church (景灵堂) in 1981. This symbolized a renewed focus on spiritual essence. An expansion in 1983 increased its capacity to 1,500 people. Today, Jingling Church stands as a beacon of faith, hosting various activities, including Bible study, youth gatherings, and a renowned choir. The choir, with over 100 members, maintains high standards. Rigorous training and memorization of numerous hymns ensure their exceptional performance during Sunday services. The church continues to serve the community, offering spiritual guidance and a place of worship for a diverse congregation. Its unique history, marked by resilience, reflects the enduring spirit of faith in Shanghai.
